NOVEMBER 2011

President's Letter

It has been an honor to serve as your president. We have accomplished a lot in the past two years. In 2010 we had our first saddle raffle which allowed us to create a fund to award our very first saddle for the Intermediate Non Pro year end award. We continued the saddle raffle in 2011 which allowed us to add 2 more saddles, adding saddles for the Rookie and Limited Non pro divisions. Hopefully we will be able to continue our success with the sale of raffle tickets in 2012 so that we can continue to add saddles to our year end awards. I would like to thank Continental Saddlery for helping us reach our goals of creating a saddle circuit.

In 2011 we also developed a very nice directory. This is an excellent form of advertising and format for thanking our sponsors. We really appreciate the sponsorships we have received. These sponsorships allow us to have the horse shows in Gordyville and Roscoe.

Our membership has gone from around 30 members in 2009 to over 100 members in 2011. We have a strong and talented membership. I encourage you all to become more involved in the club. We are only as strong and successful as the members allow us. Please bring your ideas and support to any of our board members. In 2012 we will need more help at the horse shows with announcing, scribing, working the gate, help in the show office, fund raising and multiple other things that help our shows and club to be a success.

It is now time for us to start the planning for our year end awards banquet. The award banquet will be at Mill Rose Banquet Center in Barrington on Saturday, January 28, 2012. Please save the date. I hope all of our members will try to attend and bring their friends and family. We will have dinner and entertainment. I look forward to seeing everyone at the banquet.

Sincerely yours,
Allison Oseid
President MWRHA

THIS MONTHS SOMEONE YOU SHOULD KNOW

In this spot light I had the pleasure of interviewing Jamie Miller-Werling from Geneseo Illinois.

Jamie is married to Joel and they have a 15mo old daughter, Nicole. Jamie is a full time vet who has her own clinic and 16 employees. Her practice is 80% dogs and cats and 20% horses.

Jamie grew up in St Louis and graduated from Iowa State Vet School. She moved to Illinois six years ago, with the regret of missing her St Louis sport teams. I bet it was hard this year, especially with the St Louis Cardinals winning the World Series.

Jamie at the age of fourteen has always loved the reining horses.  Jamie was able to get a reining horse when she moved to Illinois. She rides and is coached by Doug Bogart. She also is the one that got her husband involved with the horses, and now he is president of the Illinois Reining Horse Assoc.
Her goals for next year are to do well in the non-pro levels. In addition she would like to get to know more members and others in the reining industry.

This show season was her turn to show and Joel got to watch the baby.  Jamie rode Haidas Lil Okie, an 11 yr old gelding. Jamie was Rookie 1 Champion and Reserve in the Rookie 2, I would say she did rather well this year.  She thought it was so much fun competing for the Rookie Level 2 saddle. Now that she has gotten her feet wet her sights will be on the non-pro saddle for next year.

Best of luck to Jamie and everyone for 2012.

To let everyone know we are planning a one day NRHA approved saddle circuit show on June 9, 2012 at Villa Farm in Leland, Ill. Midwest will also have the May show in Gordyville and the August show. Watch the web page for additional information and dates of the approved shows.

Please take the time to answer the questioner that is in the newsletter. Since we don’t get to talk with every member this would give us an idea about the clubs potential and direction. Also enclosed is the ballot. Please take the time and send the ballot and questioner back by the 30th of November.

Just to let everyone know the raffle saddle this year was won by a non horse person and they elected to take the $1000.00 in cash. The winning ticket was sold by Art Juhrend.

On behalf of the Board for the Midwest Reining Horse Assoc. we would like to wish everyone a Safe and Happy Holiday Season.

FEBRUARY 2011

President's Letter

I want to thank everyone that attended and donated to our year end awards banquet. We had a lot of fun with the comedic act of Jimmy McHugh  and Co. I want to congratulate our year end champions for all their success. It is now time to prepare for the 2011 show season.

For any organization to succeed, it takes the full participation of all its members.  We have a real opportunity to take this organization to the next level.  However, that requires a real commitment on every member’s part.

To move forward, we need ideas from members about the direction that you would like the organization to take.  Our membership understands more than any other group the concept of teamwork.  Just as it takes a rider and horse working together to win in the ring, it takes all of use working together to succeed as an organization.

We are fortunate as an organization to have such a talented and driven membership.  But it does us no good, if we get none of that talent or drive to help the organization.   Please help us out.

Last year we had our first raffle ticket fund raiser where we raffled off a saddle that was donated by Smart Like Juice Inc. With the proceeds from that raffle we were able to raise $6000 which we used part of to purchase a saddle for the Intermediate Non Pro yearend award. This year we are using that money to purchase a saddle for another raffle and will be giving away 3 saddles for yearend awards. These saddles will be given to the Rookie, Limited and Intermediate Non Pro divisions.

You will all be receiving a packet of raffle tickets to sell. I encourage everyone to do their best and sell all of your tickets. This year the saddle is able to be custom ordered in the seat size and color of saddle that is desired. This is the Alabama Reiner by Continental Saddlery. In order to make ticket sales easier to sell to the general public they may choose to take $1000 cash instead of the saddle. If we want to continue to give saddles away for yearend awards we need to get all 800 tickets sold. Our goal is to give away saddles for each division and this can only be accomplished with the assistance and support of our members.

We are also looking for help scribing, working the gate and assisting our show secretary in the office at our May show in Gordyville and the August show in Roscoe.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Please contact myself at (815)765-2803 or Kathy Dam at (708)380-2364 if you are able to assist. We will also have a sign-up sheet at the shows.

I know I can count on you to make your ideas known.  In advance, I thank you for your input and look forward to meeting with you soon.

Sincerely,
Allison Oseid

We would like to give away three saddles in 2011 for the year end awards. Below is a picture of the saddles being offered for the 2011 show season. So the more we can build our sponsor base the better chance we have on increasing our saddle count each year.

Keep a look out on our web site for new sponsors. We will be placing their Ads on the home page as a revolving ad as well as on the Standings page.  If you have someone who might be interested in giving us a sponsorship and you don’t want to approach them, give us their name and we will talk to them.  I’m attaching a sponsorship form so you know what to offer. We also have sponsorships for any Reiner that would like to sponsor. See form for details.

The show bill for our May show is now on our Show Information page. When you book hotel rooms try to use the host hotel. They give us rooms for our judges and show secretary, free of charge, so we would like to support them.

New Show dates for the Cloverdale Show.  These new dates are May 21st & 22nd. Please make a note. This is one of our shows that we approve for yearend awards. Also, just for your information, the Illinois Reining Horse Assoc. show is on a Monday & Tuesday. They could not get weekend dates this year for the State Fair Show. They will have a Men’s & Lady’s class on Sunday night. See our Show Information page for their show bill.

Also new is the Classifieds page on the Web. Call for rates based on the size of your Ad.

THIS MONTHS SOMEONE YOU SHOULD KNOW

Corey Wilson is a trainer from La Porte, IN. He and his wife, Hannah, & their 5 year son Wyatt operate Wilson Performance Horses.

Corey was raised in central California. As a boy he was a Roy Rogers fan and loved horses, so Corey went to the Raw Hide Vocational College and enrolled in the horse program. After completing the program, a friend of a friend referred Corey to Allen Mitchell from Michigan City, IN. Corey contacted Allen to see if he could apprentice with him which led him to work and stay with Allen for 5 years. While there he started colts, trained in Reining & Cutting, showed, gave lessons, & coached the Non-Pros.
To gain more experience and methods, Corey then made a move to Ohio as assistant trainer, working for Margaret and Walter Fuchs.

During this time Corey’s parents decided they wanted to move from California. Corey was ready to start his own business, so the perfect partnership was born and together they bought a farm in La Porte, IN which is now known as Wilson Performance Horses.

What Corey enjoys about the sport of Reining is the horse’s abilities and teaching non-pro’s and youth.  He loves to instruct, and will be doing a few Rookie and regular clinics coming up this year. A goal of Corey’s is to become an NRHA judge in the near future.

When Corey is not working with the horses, he and Hannah play Volleyball. Hannah is a coach for the Jr. High and they both play on a league. Corey tells us he has some well breed young stock that he is pretty excited about working with this year.  We are happy that Corey stayed in the Midwest and has opened a Reining facility. You can learn more about Corey by going to his Web site www.wilsonperformancehorses.net. Until next time; this is someone you should know!
